LITTLE GIRL BURIED IN RUM KEG
(Inscription on a headstone, Old Burying Ground, Beaufort, NC -- buried about 1750)(Text and photographs by Rick Doble)
His daughter
dead at sea
he preserved her
in a keg of rum
so he could bring her
home
Now
two hundred years later
children
bring her gifts -
elephants
angels
toy phones
and teddy bears
